What is the SAT Exam? The SAT is a test given to high school students with a desire to attend college. Scores on the SAT are required by most colleges as part of the application process. Many colleges use it to make decisions about admissions and merit scholarships.
The SAT test is administered by the College Board, a national, nonprofit association "dedicated to preparing, inspiring, and connecting students to college and opportunity." The College Board was founded in 1900 and now boasts more than 3,800 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations in their membership. The College Board helps over three million students in 22,000 high schools connect with 3,500 colleges through their services every year. The SAT Test: Format, Timing & Question TypesAccording to the College Board, "The SAT measures the skills you have learned in and outside of
the classroom and how well you can apply that knowledge. It tests how you think, solve problems and communicate." The SAT is a test of reasoning more than it is a test of memorized facts. You will use what you know about vocabulary words, grammar and usage rules, and mathematical concepts to reason through questions and problems and choose the best answer. The Critical Reading section includes reading passages and sentence completions. The Writing section includes a short essay and multiple-choice questions on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage. The Math section includes questions on number & operations, algebra & functions, geometry & measurement, and data analysis, statistics & probability. __________________________________________What has changed about the SAT?
You may have heard the the SAT is being changed. Beginning in Spring 2016, the new format of the SAT will be in place. No need to worry about it unless you are in the Class of 2017 or later. The classes of 2014 through 2016 will take the old SAT as usual. For students graduating in 2017 or after, we will begin test prep for the new SAT in the spring of 2015. That will give you plenty of time to get prepared. You may also want to start with a test prep course now because you can still take the current SAT through early 2016 and have those scores sent to colleges you are considering. |
